BOFA TECHNICAL RESOURCES

CNC milling tool guides
for real shop decisions.

Use the material, operation and machine information you already have to narrow down a practical tool configuration. If a standard series does not fit, send BOFA a drawing for review.

SELECTION GUIDES

Start with the job,
then choose the tool.

These guides answer the questions buyers usually ask before requesting a quote. Each guide links to the relevant BOFA series and the information needed for a useful RFQ.

01

How to choose a face milling cutter

Match cutter diameter, insert geometry, cutting depth and spindle interface to the workpiece width and machine rigidity. A larger cutter is not automatically better: stable engagement, chip evacuation and available power matter just as much. Compare the BOFA face milling cutter series, then send the material, width and current tool model for a recommendation.

What information should I send?

Material and hardness, surface width, depth of cut, spindle taper, coolant and target removal rate are a good starting point.

02

Solid carbide end mill selection

Flat, ball nose and corner-radius end mills solve different cutting problems. Use a flat end mill for slots and walls, a ball nose for 3D surfaces, and a corner-radius design when edge strength and surface finish must be balanced. Flute count, helix angle, coating and stick-out should follow the material and machine setup. See BOFA end mills and include the required diameter, reach and holder when asking for data.

Can one tool cover every material?

No. Geometry and coating should be selected for the workpiece; confirm cutting parameters before production.

03

Milling cutter arbor and cutter bar guide

An arbor is the connection between the machine spindle and an indexable cutter. Check taper, pilot or bore size, key or drive details, projection and insert system before comparing models. For APMT, R390 and related cutter bars, the cutter body and matching insert must be considered together. Visit the milling cutter arbor range and attach a drawing or photo if the existing mounting is unclear.

Why does projection matter?

Longer projection can increase deflection and vibration. Use the shortest safe setup that reaches the feature.

04

Indexable U drill and insert guide

U drills use replaceable inserts for production drilling and need the right body, insert grade and coolant arrangement. Diameter, hole depth, through or blind hole, material, machine power and internal coolant determine the configuration. Review indexable U drills and name the required WC, SP or matching insert system in your RFQ. A photo of the current insert marking can prevent a mismatched quotation.

What should I check before ordering?

Confirm hole tolerance, depth-to-diameter ratio, machine spindle, coolant pressure and whether the tool is for interrupted or continuous cutting.

05

Tool holder and clamping guide

Repeatable toolholding depends on the machine taper, collet or face-mill connection, gauge length and runout requirement. The holder must match the cutter arbor and the machine spindle, not just the nominal diameter. Browse BOFA tool holders and clamps and include the spindle model, cutter interface and required reach when requesting compatibility support.

What causes holder vibration?

Common causes include excessive gauge length, contamination on mating faces, incorrect pull-stud specification or an unbalanced rotating assembly.

06

How to prepare a custom tool quotation

A clear RFQ reduces back-and-forth. Send the drawing or model, workpiece material and hardness, operation, machine and spindle interface, dimensions, insert or flute preference, quantity and target date. A photo of the current tool, workpiece or cutting result is useful when a drawing is not available. Use BOFA Request a Quote to upload a drawing, or contact the factory by WhatsApp for a quick configuration check.

Do I need a complete drawing?

No. Start with the dimensions and application you know; BOFA can confirm the missing interface or production details before quoting.

PEOPLE ALSO ASK

Common questions
before an RFQ.

Short answers are provided here for buyers comparing CNC milling tool suppliers. For model-specific advice, send the application details.

How do I choose a face milling cutter diameter?

Start with the machine spindle, workpiece width, required depth of cut and available insert grade. Choose a cutter that covers the surface with stable engagement without exceeding the machine or arbor capacity. Send the material and current tool model to BOFA for a practical match.

What is the difference between a solid carbide end mill and an indexable cutter?

A solid carbide end mill is a one-piece tool for accurate slotting, profiling and finishing. An indexable cutter uses replaceable inserts and is often preferred for larger diameters, roughing or lower-cost edge replacement. The best choice depends on material, removal rate and machine rigidity.

Which end mill is suitable for hardened steel, stainless steel or aluminum?

Use the workpiece material, hardness, machine rigidity and coolant method to select geometry and coating. BOFA HRC55 series end mills cover common hardened-steel work, while dedicated geometries and cutting data should be confirmed for stainless steel and aluminum.

What information is needed for a custom CNC milling tool quotation?

Share a drawing or model, material and hardness, machining operation, machine and spindle interface, tool diameter, reach, insert or flute preference, quantity and target delivery. A photo of the current tool or workpiece is also useful.

What is an indexable U drill and what insert details matter?

An indexable U drill is a replaceable-insert drilling tool for production holes. Diameter, drilling depth, coolant access, machine power and the WC, SP or matching insert system determine the suitable body and grade.

Can BOFA supply standard tools and non-standard tools?

Yes. Standard face mills, end mills, arbors, U drills and tool holders can be selected from the product range. For a non-standard tool, send the drawing and application details so the engineering team can confirm feasibility and quotation.
